Volunteering @ Abbeyfield House, Irvine…
We also have volunteer support and participation at Abbeyfield House, Irvine. Here is an interview held recently with one of our regular volunteers, Hazel Smith…
COULD YOU GIVE US A BRIEF VOLUNTEERING HISTORY?
‘I have worked with WRVS at Crosshouse for approximately 10 years an at the moment I have ongoing volunteering service with Ayrshire Hospice helping with fund raising. As well as this I currently also volunteer at Abbeyfield Irvine, interacting and socialising with residents’.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GO INTO VOLUNTEERING AND WHY ABBEYFIELD?
‘My mother was a resident at Abbeyfield for approximately 3 years and I had built up a relationship with the staff. On her passing I felt I could add something, if only in a small way, to help.’
WHAT IS YOUR VOLUNTEERING JOB ROLE WITHIN ABBEYFIELD AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED THERE – DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO?
‘I sit on the Executive Committee of Abbeyfield and I hold regular business meetings with residents to dicuss various aspects of ” life within Abbeyfield”. For almost 5 years, I have been making visits to Abbeyfield with my pet poodle as pet therapy for the residents as well as involving residents in craft afternoons’.
WHAT GIVES YOU THE MOST JOB SATISFACTION?
‘Feeling you have made a difference… making a differnce is a very rewarding feeling, on seeing the happy residents after a session of involvement. A very rewarding way to spend some time’.
If you are interested at all in becoming involved with Abbeyfield and becoming a volunteer, please do not hesitate to call us for more information. There are many different job roles available.
